Migration to Magento 2: how to prepare for migration of your store

2 November 2020by Krzysztof Abram0

More and more store owners built on the Magento 1 platform decide on migration to Magento 2. Some of them are convinced by the much higher performance of the current system combined with a new improved and more intuitive interface. For others, the priority is a higher level of security associated with easier installation and testing of security patches. A faster migration to Magento 2 may also be encouraged by more efficient and intuitive store management thanks to the novelties in the administration panel. However, before we start working on updating the Magento platform, it is necessary to pay attention to several important preparatory activities, which will certainly affect the success of the planned implementation.

First step – Audit and data analysis

Migration to Magento 2 is a good moment to summarize the work with this system so far and to reflect on the strategy of action in a newer environment. At the beginning it is worth to analyze what has been installed and implemented in the store so far – do the functionalities work as they should? Are they all used and needed in our business? Maybe we notice a lack of solutions that could increase sales on our online store?
At this point you can additionally look at the data collected by systems measuring traffic on the platform, such as Google Analytics, which give real knowledge about conversions from mobile devices or statistics related to the bounce rate. They will be necessary not only when selecting functions to keep customers in the store but also to facilitate the selection of the optimal server for future traffic.

Such a first preliminary analysis will help to draw conclusions from the current functioning of our business and will make it easier to set priorities when upgrading to the Magento 2 environment. It will also give a comprehensive picture of the store’s situation, both its strengths and weaknesses, which will allow, together with the selected Magento agency, to prepare a plan of all actions needed for the new version of the platform. It is also a good time to redesign or refresh the graphic design or adjust the store to new trends that make it easier for customers to move around and buy in our store.

Second step – plugins and add-ones

Once the future look and functions of the platform are established after the update, it’s time to select extensions and plugins provided by Magento external partners. Not all technical solutions will work well with our store. Sometimes it can happen that the chosen add-on doesn’t work at all after installation or even generates further bugs, not playing with other plugins. So it’s important to get an idea of the vendor market in advance and determine which extensions work best with the whole platform.
However, it’s best to commission an experienced Magento agency, which will select appropriate solutions.  Such a company will verify the quality and compatibility of the plug-in beforehand, test it after installation and make sure that no extension will generate problems.

Third step – project deadline

The structure of Magento 2 differs significantly from previous versions, which on the one hand introduces more transparency, but on the other hand makes it difficult to migrate data and ready-made templates. This involves additional work that has to be done in the technical process and, consequently, higher costs compared to previous updates. The most time-consuming and laborious are activities related to the front end (implementation of graphics or customization of a ready-made template for a given store, arrangement of elements, etc.) and work on integration with external systems, such as ERP or CRM.
The last step preparing for the migration to Magento 2 is therefore setting a date for the launch of the new platform. Due to the above factors, the time of updating work on more advanced platforms may take up to several months. Knowing in advance the scale of implementation and the amount of necessary work, it is easier to estimate such a date for the start of Magento update that the launch of a new store will take place in a quiet time. Such a solution will give time for possible minor adjustments and will allow to prepare the renewed store more accurately before the season of higher traffic.

Is Migration to Magento 2 easy?

Migrating your online store from Magento 1 to Magento 2 is definitely not an easy task. Many companies specializing in Magento have little experience with the latest development environment, so choosing the right agency specializing in Magento is a key issue in such an update. It is safest to hire professionals who have already dealt with Magento 2. They will carry out all technical work and adapt programming activities to the business strategy for the store.
